“If you’re playing a solo game, you’ll always lose out to a team”

Lawyering

According to the book “The Start-up of You” by Reid Hoffman and Ben Casnocha, no matter how brilliant your mind or strategy, if you’re playing a solo game, you’ll always lose out to a team.

It was mentioned in the context of building a network and a career but I think it is also true in the context of working on corporate transactions.

It’s never one person’s effort (or glory) when doing a transaction such as M&A or corporate finance transaction. It takes a team.

Sure, a lawyer may be good at spotting red flags when conducting legal due diligence. It gets better when another pair of eyes go through the due diligence report.

I remember those weekends and late nights rushing on dd reports and reviewing submission documents. It helped that another team member was also working on the transactions together.

The camaraderie built when working on transactions together is priceless.
