“I’m the least liked adviser”

Linkedin Post

“I’m the least liked adviser,” said one adviser.

“I’m probably the least liked person in the room,” said another person on a different occasion.

Both play a role in compliance, which can often be a lonely job.

Those in compliance roles frequently face objections from stakeholders – those they are trying to assist.

It is the nature of the compliance role to advise others on what can and can’t be done legally, as well as the risks involved. While their primary function is to ensure that organisations adhere to laws and regulations, this responsibility can put them at odds with other team members and stakeholders who may see them as obstacles to their goals.

Compliance professionals who are good at their work might be the least liked people in the room, but they are doing what they are supposed to do. We should recognise the importance of their role and show them some understanding.
